Tooth Extractions

The removal of a single tooth can lead to issues with chewing, jaw joint problems, and shifting teeth, which can affect your dental health.

The Extraction Process

During an extraction, the doctor will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic.

You will feel pressure during the extraction as the tooth is rocked back and forth to widen the socket for removal. You should not feel pain due to the anesthetic, but you may still feel the pressure.

If you experience any pain during the extraction, let us know immediately.

Sectioning a Tooth

Sometimes a tooth needs to be sectioned, especially if it’s firmly anchored or has curved roots. The doctor will cut the tooth into smaller sections and remove each section one by one.

After Tooth Extraction

After the extraction, a blood clot needs to form to stop bleeding and start the healing process. Bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes after the appointment. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze pad and bite down firmly for another 30 minutes. You might need to repeat this several times.

Once the blood clot forms, avoid disturbing it. Don’t rinse vigorously, use straws, smoke, drink alcohol, or brush near the extraction site for 72 hours. These actions can dislodge the clot and slow healing. Also, avoid intense exercise for 24 hours to prevent increased bleeding.

You might feel some pain and swelling after the extraction. Applying an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas to the area can help reduce swelling. Take pain medication as prescribed. Swelling usually goes down after 48 hours.

Follow the pain medication instructions and call our office if the medication isn’t effective. If you’re prescribed antibiotics, continue taking them as directed, even if you start to feel better. Drink plenty of fluids and eat soft, nutritious foods on the day of the extraction. You can return to your normal diet as soon as you’re comfortable.

Resume your regular dental routine after 24 hours, including brushing and flossing daily. This helps speed up healing and keeps your mouth clean.

After a few days, you should feel better and can return to your usual activities. If you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, persistent swelling for 2-3 days, or a reaction to medication, contact our office right away.
